On this page you will find five websites that will help you in your research on animal adaptations. Each website listed is appropriate for grades three through eight. These websites provide information about a number of animals and their adaptations. On some, it may be necessary to utilize the search function. If this is the case, some useful search terms may be:

On this website, you will find an informational cartoon that explains what animal adaptations are, and the difference between physical and behavioral adaptations. There is also a quick quiz to test your knowledge on animal adaptations. You can find vocabulary and definitions, as well as links to topics that are related to animal adaptations that might deepen your understanding. 

Top 10 Animal Adaptations

Did you know that growing hair or feathers is a physical adaptation? It is! And on this website from Animal Planet, you will learn about ten common animal adaptations through a slideshow. These include both behavioral and physical adaptations in animals from all over the world. Each slide includes a picture depicting the adaptation and a short explanation. This website is geared towards older elementary to middle school aged readers, and does include some more advanced language. 

Animal and Plant Adaptations

This is a website with a lot of information about adaptations written for upper elementary kids. It begins with the definition of adaptation, then breaks down the different reasons animals adapt. There are plenty of examples of animal adaptations, and interactive flashcards to test your vocabulary knowledge. You can also find a lot of questions about different animal’s adaptations, along with easy to understand explanations. There’s even a link to an episode of Generation Genius that talks all about adaptations. 

Encyclopedia Britannica 

This is an Encyclopedia Britannica Students article about animal adaptations. This article is very informative but has many scientific terms, and is best for upper elementary to middle school readers. This not only explains what adaptations are, but tells readers how adaptations occur slowly over time. The article covers natural selection, avoiding danger, seasonal changes in some animals, and more. There is a short video clip and lots of pictures to help you better understand. The article also suggests other articles that are related to adaptations for more research.

National Geographic Kids

This website is all about different types of animals. There are articles on all sorts of animal types, from mammals to birds, and reptiles to invertebrates. This website gives you information about how each animal survives, its behaviors and physical characteristics. You can read all about hundreds of animals’ adaptations, watch videos, explore slideshows, and read articles about strange and extraordinary animals. This website is great for all elementary through middle school readers, and will help you find information about a specific animal’s adaptations.
