Animal Adaptation Databases

On this page you will find three databases that will help you in your research on animal adaptations. Each database listed is appropriate for grades three through eight. These databases provide information about a number of animals and their adaptations. On some, it may be necessary to utilize the search function. If this is the case, some useful search terms may be:

  • a specific animal name

  • a specific animal adaptation

  • a physical characteristic

  • an animal behavior

DK FIND OUT

DK FindOut is an animal and plant database for younger learners, useful for elementary and middle schoolers. This website has articles on hundreds of animals, describing  characteristics and behaviors. DK FindOut also includes photos and videos, as well as information about animal habitats. There is a search bar that allows young researchers to find specific animals or adaptations.

WORLD BOOK STUDENT

World Book Student is an online encyclopedia published for the middle grades. The homepage to this website is not animal-specific, so you will have to utilize the search bar to find articles about specific animals or adaptations. You are also able to browse biology articles, under subheading such as “mammals” or “traits and behaviors.” Like the other databases, this one includes ample colorful photographs and videos.

SAN DIEGO ZOO

This animal database comes from San Diego Zoo Kids. This database is bright and easy to read, with scientific language appropriate for all elementary aged researchers. On the website you are able to filter the animals to find specific kinds, and there is a search bar. Each article includes videos, information about animal size and habitat, unique features (adaptations) and many even include the sounds they make. There is also a glossary section to help younger readers understand some difficult scientific words.
